getting ready to plant tomatoes in the garden

Free Garden Seeds

Have you noticed the displays with garden seeds going up in the stores in your community? Those displays are a sign to me that it is time to start thinking about our garden for the summer. We do not plant our garden until after the middle of May to avoid freezing, but it is fun to start planning what we want to plant. For us, the garden is a family project that gives us tasty fresh vegetables, but it can feel like a risk. What if the seeds do not grow? What if an animal eats the plants? What if we do not like what we grow?

Beginner’s Guide to Vegetable Gardening

The gardening urge tends to strike me this time of year as we start to see trees, flowers and grass come back. I love to grow flowers, herbs and a few vegetables at home. I stick with container gardening because I do not have the space for a raised bed or an in-ground plot. Even on this very small scale, gardening is a source of joy for me. Vegetable gardening not only gives you healthy, tasty food to eat, but the activity of gardening can support good physical and mental health through exercise and stress relief. Gardening can also be a valuable point of connection between people. Whether it is talking with friends about what you plan to grow or sharing your harvest with your family or neighbors, gardening can be a wonderful source of community.

Meal Planning for One

So far in our meal planning series we have heard a lot about how to engage our families in the process to make it easier and suit everyone’s preferences. That might leave you thinking that if you live on your own, meal planning will be a breeze – no arguments over dinner! I can share that I do not have to worry about others’ preferences, but for me meal planning is a must-do if I am going to eat well.

Simplifying Meal Planning with Young Kids

Do you find yourself debating a drive-thru run after work and activities on busy evenings? If you answered yes, you are not alone! As a mom of two young kids, I feel like I spend quite a bit of time during the week as the family’s taxi driver.  Occasionally we pull into a quick restaurant for a convenient meal after activities, but I have really tried to prioritize meal planning at home. Cooking at home is more cost effective for my family and ensures that my kids are eating well balanced meals.

Baking Without Eggs

Egg prices are tough for everyone right now. We usually make breakfast food for supper on Wednesday nights. My children’s favorite is when we make smoothies, scrambled eggs, and toast. They each like to help with making one of the foods. They have to take turns making the smoothies because they all want to run the blender. Since egg prices have started going up, we have stopped making this family favorite meal, which is a bummer for everyone.
