Homemade Taco Seasoning

taco seasoning in a dish

A go-to meal at my house is tacos. I often have the ingredients on hand to make them, they are easy to make, and everybody in my family loves them. Something I keep on hand to make the tacos with is our Taco Seasoning Mix. The recipe makes the equivalent of 6 (1.25 ounce) envelopes from the grocery store.

I like that the homemade seasoning mix is low in sodium. We recommend you use two tablespoons of this homemade seasoning for one pound of ground meat. This will make six servings with each having <1% of the daily value of sodium. The envelopes from the store recommend one envelope to a pound of meat which also yields six servings. Each of those servings would have 13% of your daily value of sodium A general guide is:

  • 5% DV or less of a nutrient per serving is considered low.
  • 20% DV or more of a nutrient per serving is considered high.

Watch our video about sodium on the food label to learn how to lower your sodium intake. Since my family eats tacos often, using the homemade taco seasoning mix is one way to help lower our sodium intake. It also works well with our Lentil Tacos. The mix can be stored in a cool, dry place for up to one year so make a batch today to use the next time you have tacos!
