Food Safety at Day Camp

A dad helping kids pack a lunch in the kitchen

During the summer my daughter goes to day camp during the weekdays. She has to take her lunch each day. Food safety is top of mind for me as we pack her lunch each morning. Here is what has worked for us.

  1. Freezable lunch bag-Her lunch bag goes in the freezer each night so it is frozen each morning and can keep her food cold. We also clean the bag each night and use a disinfecting wipe.
  2. Foods that don’t need refrigeration-Even though she uses a freezable lunch bag, we also try to pack foods more often that don’t need refrigeration. Some items she likes to take include fruit cups, trail mix, and a peanut butter and banana sandwich. Another option would be our Crunchy Apple Roll-Up.
  3. Hand sanitizer-She washes her hands at camp, which is the best option, but she also has a small bottle of hand sanitizer attached to her camp bag just in case she needs it.
  4. Reusable water bottle-She takes a metal reusable water bottle each day filled with ice water. I have found it helpful to have a bottle brush to clean the inside of the water bottle and a small, slender brush to clean inside the straw. The brushes make it easy to clean those hard-to-reach places.

Whether packing for day camp, a picnic, or other outdoor adventure, keep food safety in mind with these tips!
