Welcome to our final week of sharing what we keep on hand in our freezers. If you were to take a peek into my freezer, you would find a mix of foods you would expect, leftovers, and random surprises.
To start off, let’s look at the foods you might expect. I have frozen fruits and vegetables, fish, breakfast foods (waffles, sausages, hashbrowns), and popsicles. I almost always have frozen vegetables and fish on hand because they are key ingredients in one of my family’s favorite recipes, Fish and Noodle Skillet. This recipe comes together easily and everyone eats it, so I keep the ingredients on hand for nights when we need a quick supper.
Next are the leftovers. The most common leftover in my freezer is cooked meat. Right now, I have several containers of cooked ground beef and a couple of freezer bags with cooked ham. My family enjoys meat in their meals, but we are not huge meat eaters. After wasting food and money by throwing old cooked meat away, I learned to cook a larger amount at one time then portion it into freezer containers for future meals. We like to use the pre-cooked ground beef in Skillet Lasagna and the ham in Loaded Potato Soup.
Finally, let’s look at the surprises in my freezer. To be honest, these are usually impulse buys. We have some pancakes my daughter picked out, chocolate covered strawberries my husband found, and a box of Girl Scout cookies I bought. These are fun treats that we all enjoy.
Looking through my freezer to write this blog was a good reminder that I need to get in there and use up what we have on hand. I hope this series has inspired you to do the same.
