February is American Heart Month. As you may expect, at Spend Smart. Eat Smart. we usually focus in on our diet and physical activity during heart month. But did you know there are many other ways to show your heart some love? Here are a few:
- Get about 7 to 9 hours of sleep at night. Getting enough sleep is a key factor in our heart, brain, and mental health.
- Practice some ways to reduce or manage your stress levels. Some ideas are deep breathing, taking a walk or stretch break, talking with a trusted friend, or taking a break from technology.
- Cut back on alcohol. Drinking alcohol can raise your blood pressure, which is a risk factor for heart disease.
In the spirit of showing love, there are ways you can show care for the hearts of your family and neighbors too.
- Learn the symptoms of a heart attack or stroke, so you know when to contact your local emergency department.
- Take a CPR class so you can be prepared to act in case of an emergency.
- Volunteer at or participate in events in your community that raise money or awareness for heart disease or other health conditions.
A reliable place to find more information about all of the topics I shared above is the American Heart Association. What will you do to show your heart some love this month?
