As we start the new year, many people set goals to change their eating habits. They may want to increase their fiber or protein intake or drink more water. There is no shortage of products on the market claiming to help with all the above. One product that has increased in popularity recently is functional beverages. What are they and what’s in them?

A functional beverage is a nonalcoholic drink designed to offer health benefits beyond basic hydration. It might include ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, protein, fiber, prebiotics, and probiotics. Today I’ll share more about functional beverages that have added fiber. Next week, Justine will share more about drinks that have added protein.

Functional beverages with fiber are trending because people want healthier alternatives to soda and additional ways to support gut health. These drinks typically contain at least 3 grams of fiber per serving. One popular brand includes 9 grams of fiber in a 12-ounce can!

The common sources of fiber in these beverages include chicory root, cassava root, and marshmallow root. Though they do increase one’s fiber intake, they can cause digestive discomfort in people who are sensitive to these types of fiber or in people who typically consume a limited amount of fiber in a day. Drinking half a can at a time might help reduce stomach discomfort.

Chicory root can help with improving insulin sensitivity and gut health. However, it can lower blood sugar, creating a risk for hypoglycemia when combined with antidiabetic drugs so it should be used with caution alongside prescriptions like metformin.

If you want to enjoy a functional beverage in place of soda, in general, it is fine to do so. It’s also important to stay hydrated with water and eat foods high in fiber, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and dried beans. As a tasty alternative to water, try our Berry and Greens Smoothies.
