Garden Check In

fresh garden produce

Back in April I wrote a blog about good places to find free garden seeds. I also shared about how, in the summer of 2024, deer ate everything in our garden except the marigolds and zucchini. This year, we made some changes to our garden and we are feeling successful. We used a deer repellent spray around the outside of our garden, and we placed dog hair in and around our garden.

Here are some things from our garden that we are loving right now:

  • Fresh herbs: We planted basil, marjoram, rosemary, and sage. We also have chives and mint that come up each year. The kids like to eat these straight out of the garden, and we also add them to recipes.
  • Cucumbers: This year was our first time planting a cucumber plant. We have been surprised by how well it has done. It has grown better than anything else in our garden.
  • Peppers: It seems like peppers always grow slowly in our garden, and this year is no exception. The plants look good, but we will probably have to wait another few weeks before we can eat many peppers.
  • Yellow squash: Our squash plant is growing nicely this year, and we are all looking forward to eating some squash soon.
  • Flowers: My son planted a variety of flower seeds in and around our garden. Some of them grew and some did not, but we are enjoying the beauty of the blooms we have right now.
