This week it is my turn to share a Spend Smart. Eat Smart. recipe mashup. Christine and Katy shared main dish mashups, so I thought I would sweeten it up and share a dessert mashup. I used the base of our Cranberry Oatmeal Bars recipe to make, what I am calling, Apple Crisp Bars.
I started by dicing up two apples and stirring them together with two teaspoons of white sugar and one teaspoon of cinnamon. I set the diced apples off to the side while I mixed together all the ingredients for our Cranberry Oat Bars, except the cranberries. You can save your dried cranberries for a different recipe. I spread the oat mixture on the bottom of a 9-inch by 13-inch baking pan and sprinkled the diced apples on the top. I gently pushed the apples down into the oat mixture to make sure they stayed in place. I baked these at 350 degrees until they were lightly brown around the edges and set in the middle. They needed 24 minutes in my oven, but I would recommend checking them around 20 minutes and then deciding if they need more time.
These bars are like eating an upside-down apple crisp with the oatmeal mixture on the bottom and the apples on the top. We loved them so much that the entire pan was gone within 24 hours.
Did you know that Spend Smart. Eat Smart. already has some great mashup recipes on the website and app? Here are some of my favorite mashup main dish and snack recipes.
