One of the best things about summer in Iowa is the wonderful fruits and vegetables that come into season. Sweet corn, summer tomatoes, and fresh green beans are high on my list. In Iowa, we are lucky to have a program that helps Iowans who participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) eat more fruits and vegetables while sticking to their grocery budget.
The Iowa Healthiest State Initiative coordinates Double Up Food Bucks, which doubles the value of SNAP benefits spent at participating farmers markets and grocery stores, helping people get more fruits and veggies for their money. This year, Iowans who participate in SNAP have the option to sign up for Double Up Food Bucks online, making it easier than ever.
Visit the Double Up Food Bucks website to learn how to sign up for the program, find locations near you, and maximize your benefits. When you bring home your summer produce, remember the Spend Smart. Eat Smart. Produce Basics collection has tips for cleaning, storing, and using fresh fruits and vegetables.
Enjoy!
